• Building smart teams, wise leaders
    and healthy systems

  • To make any kind of meaningful change you need to get clear about what you hope to achieve and where you want to go, then you’ve got to commit to the journey and get moving.

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”

    - Albert Einstein

“Toleration is the greatest gift of the mind; it requires the same effort of the brain that it takes to balance oneself on a bicycle."

    - Hellen Keller

  • Smart Teams

    Wise Leaders

Every now and then one of us comes out fully hatched - a natural leader - but for the most part, leadership is something we learn, often painfully, through trial and error. Think about the qualities you most admire in leaders who’ve influenced you – they have our backs, they support us in big and small ways, they know their stuff, they get things done, they make tough decisions when called to, they seek out perspectives differing from their own, they build loyalty, and they remain composed under pressure. These are skills that can be learned, not traits we’re necessarily born with. Yes, with focus, practice and a little help from our friends, we can become better and wiser leaders. Here are some of the services I provide to help make that happen:

  • Healthy Systems

Healthy systems are where most of us want to work - as well as the organizations we want to do business with - because they exhibit the following characteristics; they have a clear and compelling mission that fully engages us, they get the basics right, execute well and keep workarounds to a minimum, their structure, culture and people support their mission, they’re resilient and have mechanisms in place to get through tough times, and they’re adaptive to change and capable of self-renewal. And they're a pleasure to work in and with. Here are some of the services I provide to help build healthy systems.

    Embodied Wisdom

Most of us, for better or worse, live mostly in our heads, and I'm no exception. But there's a very direct and powerful relationship between our bodies and our minds which we can tap into and exploit if we know where to look and how to exert leverage. My puppy Maxwell, well, he gets it, and he's been an inspiration for this concept of "embodied wisdom," drawn from modern neuroscience and the work of Moshe Feldenkrais, an Israeli physicist turned movement pioneer.

  • Blog: Notes from the Road

In this section I've included some short ride reports, a longer piece on becoming a better bicyclist, and several articles - drawn from my field experiences working with clients - on feedback, team building and ways to beat the blame game.

  • So…before we get ahead of ourselves, where do you want to go? What are you committed to make happen? What do you want to build?

    About Marty Kaplan

My approach to working with people is based on a belief that we're built from the outside-in but we develop from the inside-out. Put differently, our context shapes who we've become and how we behave, but each day we freely choose how we'll deal with the hand we've been dealt and the circumstances in which we find ourselves. Thus, my emphasis on systems, teams and individuals, and my comfort shuttling between these levels.
